Tree and Shrub Planting

Swingle Plantings Include:

  • Initial watering
  • Root stimulant additive to encourage fibrous root growth
  • Mulch to conserve moisture
  • A water well around the tree to make watering easier and more efficient

  • Warranty (available)

Tree and shrub planting can be challenging in Colorado. Our unique soil and environmental conditions can be difficult to understand, and oftentimes requires the advice of a professional. Selecting the right trees and shrubs is important.

Planting new trees and shrubs that are appropriate to the area increases your property value, saves energy costs and makes your home’s landscape more beautiful. Whether you need a variety of trees and shrubs for a major landscape renovation, or simply a single tree to shade your home, with over 40 certified arborists on-staff, Swingle has the recommendations that are right for you.

Watering is critical

  • ŸWater trees every 5 – 7 days by filling the water well and letting the water soak into the root ball
  • Water shrubs every 2 – 3 days by applying water until the roots are thoroughly saturated
  • Water perennials every day as needed

The best times to water are early in the morning or evening, which will help reduce evaporation. It is also good, at the same time, to spray down the leaves of deciduous trees and the needles of evergreens during hot weather periods.

Trees planted in lawn areas equipped with sprinkler systems may not need to be watered as frequently. A simple method to check the plant’s moisture content is to use the “crumble test”. Dig down around the root ball about 3″ deep. When you find the soil too dry to form a ball when squeezed in your hand, it needs water. If the soil ball feels moist and stays together, hold off watering.

Remember: Too much water can do as much harm to a plant as too little. During prolonged dry periods in the fall and winter (October – March), water one to two times per month, when the temperature is above 40 degrees.

Tree cabling:

  • Reduces the risk of branch breakage when installed on joints
  • Can be used on overextended branches for support
  • Works with brace rods or other tree bracing

Newly planted and young trees often need pruning to enhance their structure. This includes removing weakly attached and interfering branches, while cutting overextended limbs. This pruning helps prevent damage and shapes the tree as it ages.
