The sooner you start thinking about that gorgeous lush lawn that you want, the better. Take steps from the Denver lawn care experts to ensure a carpet of gorgeous green in your yard in the coming months.
GET TO THE CORE
Spring is a fantastic time to aerate your lawn—it’s a surefire way to loosen the soil, allow roots to reach deeper and provide enhanced water absorption in the coming months. It’s also a great way to control thatch, a layer of the soil that can reduce proper water movement. Aerate with core holes about 2-3 inches deep to deliver the greatest benefit. Don’t have an aerator? A lawn care company can easily take care of this annual duty for you.
LOCK IN THE LUSH
While you’re aerating the lawn, consider overseeding at the same time. This will make a huge difference for those lawns that were thinned out by last year’s drought conditions, or if you’ve had any winter mite activity.
GIVE IT A KICK START
Fertilization at the beginning of the season is highly recommended. Choose one that has a mixture of both quick and slow releasing nitrogen sources. A lawn care company will be able to recommend and apply the right one for your area, or seek out advice at your local garden store.
SET YOUR SPRINKLERS
Now is the time to become reacquainted with your sprinkler system. Once we’re clear of any hard freezes, turn on the system and run it through its cycles. Repair or replace any broken irrigation heads and adjust any heads that are missing their mark. Set the timer to follow your community’s watering program standards.
TAKE A PREEMPTIVE STRIKE
Get a head start on controlling weeds such as crabgrass and foxtail, by applying a preemergent herbicide. Be careful not to apply these if you’re overseeding at the same time. And when you do apply them, be sure to do so with at least ½ inch of water.
