Swingle Plant Pathologist, Steve Geist, Accomplishes Fundraising Goal of $100K

The TREE Fund provides funds for tree research grants to accredited facilities, educational post secondary scholarships, and educational programs (field trips) for children who would not normally have the opportunity to learn about nature.

Steve’s involvement with the TREE Fund began nearly 25 years ago. Following in the footsteps of former Swingle owner and president, Charles Morgan, he became interested in raising money for the research and awareness of urban trees. Chuck and his wife, Ann would go to industry events preparing BBQ meals. Afterwards, Chuck often sold books at industry events to raise money.

“I sit on the scholarship and educational program subcommittee and it is very rewarding to provide grants for these worthwhile programs,” said Steve.

Steve joined the TREE Fund’s premiere fundraising event STIHL Tour des Trees in 1989. Each year, individual riders are required to raise $3,500 to ride in the tour. This year’s tour begins outside of Buffalo, NY on July 28 culminating in Toronto, Canada on August 3 – 585 miles later.

STIHL Tour des Trees has raised over $6,000,000. This year, Steve’s fundraising pushed him over the $100,000 mark in cumulative gifts (1989 – 2013). Steve has raised a grand total of $100,337.50, to be exact. He is the first tour rider to reach this noteworthy milestone.
